Evaluation of West Bengal Branch of Indian Pharmacological Society
The Indian Pharmacological Society (IPS) came into existence at Patna in January 1969. The events that presaged the birth of the society had been taking shape much earlier. The Pharmacologists of the Country had formally found representation in the association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India (APPI). Their number has increased substantially in the meanwhile and their discipline developed to dimensions that made separate representation imperative at national level. The Indian Pharmacological Society was inaugurated at Patna by Prof. Uvnas on January 5, 1969. Col. Ram Nath Chopra was elected the first President of the society, Dr. U. K. Sheth its General Secretary, Dr. G. Achari as treasurer and Dr. K. P. Bhargava as Chief Editor.

In the glorious century of scientific advancement, the contribution of Pharmacologists in India is well recognized. In spite of sophisticated infrastructural facilities, we have abundant expertise and magnificent ancestral legacy of indigenous systems of medicine. This is still vibrant and promises to show to the world the immense potential of Indian Pharmacologists. The time has come for Pharmacologists to concentrate more on operational research, especially on cost-benefit analysis and improvement in the quality of life, as drugs are considered to be the major requirements of health care budget.
